How long does it take to build a website?
The honest answer is 'anywhere from a day to a few months', and the range is almost entirely about process, not difficulty. Here's what really eats the time, and how some studios ship in hours what others take weeks to do.

Most people asking this have been quoted six to eight weeks and are wondering if that's normal. It's common, but it's not because building a website takes six weeks. It's because most studios' processes take six weeks. Those are different things.
The realistic ranges
- A single landing page: a day to a few days, done well.
- A small business website (a handful of pages): one to two weeks with a lean process, three to eight weeks with a traditional agency.
- A larger site with a content system, e-commerce or integrations: several weeks to a few months, genuinely, because there's real engineering.
- An enterprise platform: months, and a different conversation entirely.
Where the time actually goes
The build itself is rarely the slow part. The slow parts are the gaps between the work.
- Waiting for content. The single biggest delay on almost every project. Copy and photography you promised to send three weeks ago.
- Rounds of review that sit in someone's inbox for days.
- Internal handoffs. Designer to developer to QA to account manager, each with a queue.
- Scope that grows mid-project without anyone deciding to grow it.
Notice that none of those are the actual making of the website. They're the process around it. Which is why the timeline is a choice, not a law.
